Facial feminisation surgery

Facial feminisation surgery (FFS) is a series of procedures intended to reconstruct the male face to make it look more feminine. FFS includes various bony and soft tissue procedures.
FFS techniques are derived from maxillofacial and reconstructive surgery as well as general plastic and cosmetic surgery.

Facial feminisation Surgery is generally regarded as an important step in the transition from male to female.

Gender identity refers to a person’s internal, deeply felt sense of being male or female. Because gender identity is internal and personally defined, it is not visible to others. It takes only a fraction of a second for a face to be recognised as belonging to a male or female.

Dr Bart van de Ven and Dr Daniel Simon

Dr Bart van de Ven (the Netherlands) and Dr Daniel Simon (Brazil) are maxillofacial surgeons that specialized in facial feminisation surgery (FFS).

In November 2006 Dr Bart van de Ven visited Dr Ousterhout in San Francisco and Dr Kabaker (specialist in hair restorative surgery) in Oakland. Dr van de Ven and Dr Noorman van der Dussen from Antwerp went to Kenya twice for cleft lip and palate operations and performed many FFS-surgeries together in Antwerp.

Dr. Bart van de Ven (the Netherlands) and Dr Daniel Simon (Brazil) got to know and appreciate each other’s expertise during two missions in Vietnam and Kenya for the Cleft Surgery Organization (now called Caras Felices). This organisation is an initiative of Dr Bart van de Ven. Its mission is to provide free cleft surgery for affected children from poor families (www.carasfelices.es).

Dr Bart van de Ven and Dr Daniel Simon not only shared their passion for this charity work, but also shared the dream of starting an all-round clinic for facial surgery and dentistry in Europe, where patients could access quick and superior treatment options.

Mostly we perform a combination of procedures during facial feminisation surgery (FFS). The complete intervention normally lasts between 4 and 8 hours depending on its extensiveness. We advice our patients to stay in the hospital 1 or nor 2 nights postoperative.

Breast augmentation, abdominoplasty or liposculpture

If you are interested in breast augmentation surgery, abdominoplasty or liposculpture we can invite our plastic surgeon, dr Kai Kaye, to see you. Sometimes these procedures can be performed together with the facial feminisation surgery. We also have good contacts with a hairtransplantation centre in Marbella.

Complications of facial feminisation surgery

After a facial feminisation procedure it’s normal that the patient feels she looks horrible and is afraid never to look normal again. As the swelling and bruising fade away and the face gets more female contours the anxiety should go.

The most likely risks of a facial feminisation procedure (as in all esthetic surgery) are more psychological than physical. Sometimes people rely on facial feminisation surgery as a solution for problems that surgery cannot solve and become depressed. It’s very important to have realistic expectations.

Physical complications that might occur after facial feminisation surgery are: unsatisfactory cosmetic results, asymmetry and permanent numbness of certain areas of the face. If the patient is really not happy with the result and we think we can improve the patient satisfaction we’re always willing to do a second surgery without charging fees (see general conditions).
