The word orthognathic comes from the Greek word orthos, meaning to straighten, and gnathos, meaning jaw. Orthognathic surgery thus means “surgery to straighten the jaw”.

5. Too small upper jaw
When the upper jaw is too narrow, this results in what is called a transverse maxillary deficiency. With a distraction procedure the upper jaw can be widened until it fits around the lower jaw.
